BACKGROUND INFO:
Y-COP (Youth Community Outreach Program) is a multi-purpose, nonprofit agency founded in 1992. They provide recreational activities, employment counseling, tutoring programs and social service assistance to our middle-school and high-school target audience. (www.ycopyouth.org)
The Afrikan Brotherhood, is a grassroots mentoring organization fiscally sponsored by Y-COP. This group of community leaders, professional businessmen and elder mentors provide cultural-specific programming to youth and the greater community of Mount Vernon, NY through annual programs including Kwanzaa, Rites of Passage, drumming ceremonies, mentoring field trips targeting at-risk youth, educational forums and the annual Afrikan Family Day and Scholarship Festival.
Afrikan Family Day is the largest, longest-running, FREE cultural community festival in the City of Mount Vernon, NY. Afrikan Family Day celebrates the influence of African culture in all parts of the world. Held outdoors in Memorial Field Stadium, the theme for this year's 23rd annual celebration of community and family is Honoring The Family and Uplifting The Community. This festival is sponsored in part by The City of Mount Vernon, NY and Westchester County Executive's Office of African American Affairs.
